Tsugaike REPORT

2025.09.09Tsugaike Nature Park / Overcast

The “Tsugaike Ropeway” (pictured, consisting of the Tsugaike Gondola and Tsugaike Ropeway) has returned to its regular schedule, starting at 8:00 a.m. on weekdays and 7:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays. However, early morning operation will once again be offered during the autumn foliage season! On 9/27 (Sat.), 9/28 (Sun.), 10/4 (Sat.), 10/5 (Sun.), and from 10/11 (Sat.) through 10/13 (Mon., holiday), service will begin from 7:00 a.m. In addition, extra ropeway departures will be added on those days to accommodate increased numbers of visitors.

At Mizubasho Marsh, Watasuge Marsh, and Ukishima Marsh (pictured), the ground cover seemed to be transitioning to fall colors more and more with each passing day. Within the marshes, I found plenty of iwa-shobu flowers, some still white while others had shifted to soft shades of pink. Along the connecting trails between the marshes, clusters of oyama-rindo were blooming in abundance, and at the Ukishima Marsh, I was able to observe beautiful purple tori-kabuto blossoms up close.

Throughout the Tsugaike Nature Park, the leaves of the broadleaf trees have begun to take on a yellowish tint. This change was especially noticeable on the dakekanba birches, whose foliage is quick to show the shift in season. At the same time, some of the nanakamado (Japanese rowan, pictured) and low-lying plants such as chinguruma were already showing patches of bright red, hinting at the richer autumn colors soon to come.

Although today’s skies were mostly cloudy, after spending some time at the Tenbo Marsh the clouds parted and revealed sweeping views of the Hakuba Daisekkei, Mt. Shakushi, and Mt. Hakuba Yarigatake (pictured). Autumn often brings these breaks in the clouds that are less common in summer. Shortly afterward, I met two visitors from Tokyo who had just arrived. They told me, “It’s our first time coming to Tsugaike in summer. The scenery is wonderful, and the walk itself is really enjoyable.”
