It was a wonderfully refreshing morning with the temperature at a cool 17°C and low humidity in the air after the passage of the typhoon. Since my last visit on 8/28 (Thu.), the marshes had taken on even deeper yellow tones. Most passengers on the first and second runs of the Tsugaike Ropeway headed to the hiking trail leading toward Mt. Hakuba Norikura, so the crowds at the Tsugaike Nature Park didn’t really start to build until around 10 a.m.

At the Ukishima Marsh (pictured), early-autumn flowers such as iwa-shobu, oyama-rindo, and yachi-torikabuto were in bloom, alongside the berries of kuromame-no-ki and nanakamado. Some of the iwa-shobu flowers had already shifted from their early white to shades of pink and red, adding soft touches of color to the marsh. A light north wind helped cool things down, quickly drying the bit of sweat I’d worked up while walking.

By the way, I was asked about the Tsugaike Nature Park Stamp Rally, which is currently underway. After downloading and opening the Yamasta app, you’ll need to display the Tsugaike Nature Park map and set off toward the five checkpoints. At each one of the checkpoints, simply press the “Check-in” button to collect a digital stamp. Once you’ve gathered them all and earned a digital trophy, stop by the shop on the 2nd floor of Village Tsugaike after exiting the gondola on your way back. Showing your trophy there will earn you both a certificate of completion and a commemorative pin.

Between the Mizubasho Marsh and Watasuge Marsh, the boardwalk was lined with clusters of bright red oba-takeshimaran berries (pictured). They were so numerous and vivid that you couldn’t miss them. Nearby, the plump, round berries of the sankayo plant had ripened to a rich bluish hue, reminiscent of blueberries.
