Tateyama REPORT

2025.11.20130 cm / Sunny

If you want to experience deep snow right now, Tateyama is one of the best places you can go. This season in particular, the amount of snow is on a completely different level than last year, and the difference is striking when compared with photos from last year’s report around this time (the first photo was taken from almost the exact same angle). I spoke with three visitors from Niigata (pictured) who called out to me, saying, “Oh, you’re from Snownavi! We always follow your reports. We never thought we’d run into you out here. Keep up the great work with your coverage!”

During the snowfall from 11/17 (Mon.) to 11/19 (Tue.), there were periods of full-on blizzard conditions, and wind-sculpted snowdrifts had formed across many slopes. According to today’s announcement from the Tateyama Mountain Accident Prevention Council on 11/20 (Thu.), the snow depth has reached 130 cm. That’s 100 cm more than at the time of last year’s report (11/25), and almost the same amount as two years ago on the same date. In the foreground of the photo is Mt. Jodo, with Mt. Kunimi in the upper left.

Several sets of tracks from the day before were still visible on the north face of Mt. Jodo (pictured) and the west face of Oyama. In places, a few larger rocks and the tops of low shrubs were poking through the snow, and there were also patches of refrozen old snow. As people dropped into their runs, I overheard comments like, “Whoa, that’s sketchy!” and “It feels great, but the conditions are tricky!”

This final shot is a stunning view of the Mikuri-ga-ike pond backed with the peaks of Tateyama—and seems almost too beautiful to be real. Skies stayed perfectly clear through early afternoon, but the northwesterly wind gradually picked up, and spindrift began to rise off the ridgeline. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route will remain open until next weekend, 11/30 (Sun.).
