“Happy New Year, Snownavi—and thank you again for your support this year,” was the comment I received from a Hakuba Alps Hotel staff member (pictured). Right from the start of the morning, I received many such friendly greetings, including from a skier visiting from Shiga Prefecture, a snowboarder from Azumino City, and a pair from Shizuoka Prefecture—thank you all for stopping to say hello.

At Hakunori, the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair (pictured, background) began operating on 12/29 (Mon.), opening up the Rabbit Course (first photo). Both the Rabbit Course and the Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) had picked up 5 to 10cm of light new snow on top of a well-set, groomed moist snow base. With almost no bushes or thin snow spots remaining, conditions were good and confidence was high.

I ran into a “puppy walker” from Osaka Prefecture (a volunteer who raises puppies that will eventually become guide dogs), who told me, “This little one is also scheduled to become a guide dog in the future.” After posing nicely for the photo (pictured), the puppy came charging over to me with lots of kisses after the walker said it was OK! On the Hakunori Family Course, 2 to 3cm of light new snow lay on top of a moderately firm, easy-to-ski groomed surface of moist snow.

I crossed paths with the owner of Chamingo (pictured), who commented, “Happy New Year. We’re fully booked at the moment, but most of our guests head out to ski early in the morning, so it lets me come out and ski at this hour too.” I skied the fully ungroomed Satomi Central Slope, which had 8 to 10cm of light new snow, and was careful to keep an eye out for the scattered bushes along the way.
