Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2026.01.08120 cm / Snowy

Looking back to the start of the season, things got off to a smooth start, but snowfall was hard to come by later during the early stages. Luckily, cold temperatures and steady snowfall have continued since the official base depth finally reached 100 cm on New Year’s Day. This morning, with the thermometer reading a frigid -8 °C and a northerly wind blowing strong at times, I braced against the cold and headed up on the Alps No. 3 High-Speed Pair (pictured) as it got running at 8:00 a.m., and was excited to find the smooth, untouched snow surface on the Kamoshika Course.

The upper half of the Highway Course and the Kamoshika Course were groomed with a moderately firm surface made of a mix of powder snow and moist snow, with around 10 cm of light new snow on top. On the lower half of the Highway course leading down toward the Wakaguri Central Slope, the fresh layer on top increased to roughly 15 to 20 cm. I straight-lined the upper section with shallow, fast turns, then opened it up with long, sweeping arcs on the wide lower section.

Around 20 cm of light new snow had piled up on the Rabbit Course (pictured), where the well-packed powder grooming provided a moderately firm, easy-to-ski base. The snowfall was dense and relentless, showing no sign of letting up during my time on the mountain, and when I returned to the parking lot at 9:30 a.m., another 10 cm had already accumulated on the hood of my car. By the way, from noon to 6:00 p.m. on 1/11 (Sun.), a DJ event will be held around Hakuba Norikura’s outdoor heated pool, the Hakuba Norikura Aqua Oasis.

Rewinding to the start of the day, I ran into two guests from Matsumoto City (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports! It really dumped, didn’t it? By the way, where’s the ticket window?” Incidentally, ticket windows are located next to the No. 1 Pair and No. 6 Pair loading areas (both open from 7:45 a.m.), as well as next to the former No. 7 Pair loading area in Satomi (open from 8 a.m., ticket machine only).
