The snow that had been falling since the early hours of yesterday finally let up before lift operations began today, and sunshine started to reach the lower slopes. Early on I met a pair visiting from Kyoto Prefecture and Chino City in Nagano (pictured), who told me, “We always read your reports—are you really going to take our photo? Yes! Our target today is the powder on Sky View.” Guests began lining up at the No. 9 Pair from around 8 a.m., and by 8:30 a.m. the line had stretched to roughly 60 meters.

When I arrived at the No. 10 Pair loading area, a staff member told me, “The machinery isn’t running great, so there’s a chance the start might be delayed.” In the end, however, the lift began running before the scheduled 9 a.m. start. Around the same time as the lift started, the back of the line had stretched almost all the way to the unloading area for the No. 9 Pair.

At the top of the resort, dry snow was blowing in on a fairly strong northwest wind, and the Sky View Slope (pictured) had picked up a light, fluffy layer of 30 to 40cm of new snow. As riders unloaded from the No. 10 Pair, they dropped in one after another with cheers, and the area alongside the lift quickly filled with fresh tracks.

That said, Sky View is the resort’s highest slope and an ultra-wide expanse stretching some 250 meters across, and plenty of untouched powder still remained on the skier’s left side (pictured). Meanwhile, the groomed Satomi Central Slope, Wakaguri Central Slope, and Wakaguri Forest Course all had pleasantly soft, easy-to-ski powder conditions.
