The wind that had been blowing through the early morning hours finally eased, and the final day of the three-day holiday weekend began with calm and sunny weather. Before operations began, I spoke with a man from Wakayama Prefecture (pictured) who said, “I always read your reports. It’s a long way from home so I can’t come very often, but I still make it up here about twice a month. If I ski the Highway first and then head over to Sky View (pictured, background), will that be too late (to catch some fresh tracks)?”

With sufficient snow coverage across the resort for the three-day holiday weekend, I decided to skip what was sure to be a very crowded Sky View area and stick to the Wakaguri side instead. On the upper half of the Highway Course and the Kamoshika Course (pictured), 2 to 3 cm of light new snow sat on top of moderately firm, well-packed powder grooming. On the ungroomed lower half of Highway, the fresh snow deepened significantly, with around 20 to 25 cm covering the base.

With both groomed and ungroomed runs skiing beautifully and conditions shaping up as a perfect powder day, I found a long line already stretching all the way down to Snow Drop (pictured) at the Alps No. 3 Pair after just one run down the Kamoshika Course. “I’ve never seen a line this long here before,” a patrol member commented. Maybe more people are finally starting to realize just how good Hakunori really is.

I had a chat with two members of the Tokushima Ski Association (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports. We chose Hakunori for the three-day weekend because it’s perfect for training, and after skiing we’ll be driving eight hours home.” I was able to carry speed comfortably and enjoy a smooth, flowing run from the Rabbit Course (pictured), where moderately firm, well-packed powder grooming made for excellent conditions, all the way down to the Wakaguri Central Slope.
