It was a calm morning, with the rising sun breaking through gaps in the clouds. With the temperature at an unseasonably warm 2 °C, the lower half of the Kamoshika Course (pictured), where fine granular snow had been pressed by the groomers, was already beginning to soften even before the resort opened. Being a Monday in January, the flow of visitors to the resort was very slow and relaxed.

On the upper half of the Kamoshika Course and the Highway Course (pictured), moderately firm, well-packed moist snow grooming allowed my edges to bite cleanly, letting my skis run freely and build speed with ease. Hakunori Family, Wakaguri Central, and Wakaguri Forest featured finely granulated, “beach-like” groomed snow, and on these well-maintained slopes I was able to link turn after turn exactly as I intended.

By the way, Hakunori is currently hosting the limited-time “Jim Beam Winter Fest” through 3/29 (Sun.). Every day from 4 p.m., the area next to the No. 4 Pair loading zone becomes the venue for DJ events and a bonfire, with a special-edition food truck serving cans of Jim Beam Highball (pictured, ¥800), Ginger Hot Toddy with toasted cinnamon (¥800), mackerel burritos (¥1,580), and more.

As the day went on, sunshine became increasingly blocked by cloud cover, and the forecast is calling for the longest cold wave of the season to arrive starting tomorrow, 1/20 (Tue.). As of 11 a.m., with a low-pressure system moving north through the Sea of Japan, temperatures remained high, and the softened surface layer on the groomed Wakaguri Central (pictured) and Satomi Central runs had grown noticeably thicker.
