Before operations began this morning, a line had already formed at the No. 8 Pair loading area (pictured), made up of both regular visitors and competitors taking part in the “Morishita Jintan 2026 Osaka Prefecture Kids Moguls Competition,” being held from 1/16 (Fri.) to 1/18 (Sun.). With occasional strong southerly gusts, the morning air felt surprisingly mild to start the day. During the 8 a.m. hour, the Satomi Central Slope offered well-packed, firm moist snow grooming where my skis ran fast and smoothly.

I crossed paths with a father from Kyoto Prefecture (just out of frame), who told me, “I always read your reports!” He then called out to the young athletes, “Hey everyone, Snownavi is taking photos!” He went on to explain, “My kids (pictured, center, bib numbers 22 & 25) are the youngest competitors in the event. It’s organized by the Osaka Prefecture Ski Association, but it’s the only nationwide moguls competition for elementary school students in Japan, and it decides this season’s No. 1 skier at the elementary school level.”

From the slopes, I could see strong winds along the ridgelines of the Northern Alps sending snow billowing high into the air. First thing in the morning, both the Highway Course (pictured) and the Kamoshika Course featured well-packed, firm moist snow grooming. I met a family from Hyogo Prefecture, who commented, “We always read your reports! Our child (pictured) will be competing in the Chanmero Freeride event on 1/25 (Sun.), so we came to participate in the pre-camp being held today and tomorrow.”

After dropping straight down the Highway Course (pictured), the combination of sunshine and mild temperatures had me breaking a light sweat. The Wakaguri Central Slope and Wakaguri Forest Course were groomed with moderately firm, moisture-rich snow, offering stable, easy skiing. Before long, the surface of the groomed runs began to soften, and after 10 a.m., clouds started spilling over the Northern Alps and spreading across the sky.
