Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2026.01.16150 cm / Partly Sunny

This morning I spoke with a lift operator who told me, “Steady rain fell last night.” In fact, rain set in as temperatures rose yesterday evening, but stopped before dawn, and the cloud cover began to break around 8:00 a.m. I ran into a man who lives in Hakuba Village (pictured) who said, “I always read your reports. I have a joint season pass for Hakunori and Cortina, and with it being quiet today, it’s great to get some uninterrupted turns in.”

A thin layer of moist new snow lay on top of the Highway Course and the Kamoshika Course, where the groomed surface consisted of firmer, moisture-rich snow. Even still, my skis ran freely with no friction braking, making it easy to carry speed comfortably. The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) offered well-packed, easy-to-ski moist snow grooming that felt stable and inspired confidence.

A light northeast wind was blowing steadily and occasional strong gusts whipped up the snow. The Rabbit Course (pictured) had a light dusting of moist new snow, and shared the same firm, moisture-rich groomed surface as the Highway Course. Just as forecasted, Asian Dust appeared to be blowing in, giving parts of the Rabbit Course a faint yellowish tint.

Two guests from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured) commented, “We always read your reports. We love Hakunori and come here to board often. Today is our first day on snow this season, so we’re taking it easy until we get used to the firmer conditions.” Along the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair (pictured, left side), the slope had been sectioned off in preparation for a cross course installation, though it was still open to skiers today.
