This morning I ran into five visitors from Mie Prefecture and Hakuba Village (pictured) who told me, “We always follow your reports! We’re HAKUBA VALLEY season pass holders. We split up and came up via the gondola and the Riesen Quad, and now we’re heading out to ski Riesen together.” On the south-side route at Usagidaira (pictured), about 1cm of light new snow sat on top of a well-set groomed wet-snow surface that still had a pleasantly powdery feel, making it easy to ski.

Along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the snow quality matched that of the south-side route at Usagidaira, and I was able to open things up and enjoy big, flowing turns. The Skyline Course also had groomed wet snow with a powdery feel, though it was noticeably firmer than Kurobishi. Temperatures were very low, but with almost no wind, it felt surprisingly comfortable.

I met two visitors from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured) who commented, “We always follow your reports! The snow quality is good, but we’d love to see a bit more. We’re both staying at our regular lodge and having a great time. I got here today (pictured, right), and he’s been here since 1/4 (Sun.) (pictured, left).” The snowfall overnight was lighter than expected, with just 2 to 3cm even in the ungroomed sections along the Kurobishi 3 Pair.

The Kita-One forest road had 1 to 2cm of light new snow on top of a firm, groomed wet-snow surface. On the Sakka Slope (pictured), the groomed wet snow was well set, and elementary school ski lessons were taking place. By the way, a “FACTION SKIS Demo Day” will be held at the Nakiyama Slope on 1/24 (Sat.) and 1/25 (Sun.) (free to join; ID required).
