Even on a January weekday—normally the quietest time of the season—HAPPO PARKS was drawing plenty of riders this morning. The well-set groomed powder made it easy to build speed, giving more than enough run-up to each feature. With another cold wave expected to arrive later tonight, intense cold persisted under calm, overcast skies with almost no wind.

As you can see, the kickers offer plenty of options: hit them directly, send them as jumps, or simply roll over them like waves. With both the slope and features carefully maintained day after day, it feels great whether you’re landing tricks or just cruising through the park. The rime ice-covered trees surrounding the park added to the atmosphere and helped lift the mood.

Rewinding to first thing in the morning, dense fog had settled in across the top of the resort, from the top section of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) upward. While the fog thinned at times during the day, visibility remained limited throughout my reporting. The Riesen Slalom Course itself had a moderately firm, groomed powder surface, and I took my first run at a relaxed pace.

I met three visitors from Gifu Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “We came up for an overnight trip yesterday. With the strong winds yesterday, we enjoyed skiing the lower slopes, and Happo really stands out for its snow quality and wide courses—it’s fantastic!” The south-side route at Usagidaira, the area along the Kurobishi Quad, and the central section of Skyline all shared the same well-set groomed powder as Kita-One, and I made it a point to ski cautiously through the thick fog.
