Happo-one REPORT

2026.01.29280 cm / Snowy

Despite what was expected, the cold temperatures barely eased even after the cold wave passed, allowing the resort to roll straight into the next upcoming cold wave without skipping a beat. This morning, roads down in the village iced over, while light, dry snow fell gently across both the upper and lower slopes while conditions were otherwise calm. Rime ice continued to cling to the trees from mid-mountain upward.

The upper to mid section of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) featured a moderately firm, groomed powder surface. The lower Usuba Slope transitioned to a firmer surface where powder snow had been mixed with machine-made snow and pressed by the groomers. A thin layer of 2 to 3cm of light new snow covered the run, and carving turns sent soft plumes of snow drifting into the air.

On Kurobishi, which was wrapped in dense fog, a skier from Mie Prefecture (pictured) called out to me saying, “I always follow your reports! Covering the slopes with poor visibility like this must be tough, but the snow conditions are great!” The south-side route at Usagidaira had about 2cm of light new snow on top of a well-set groomed powder base. In the area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the groomed powder was moderately firm and very easy to ski.

I emerged below the cloud layer after skiing down the Skyline Course to the midsection (pictured) on well-set groomed powder. Along the ungroomed sections beside the Kurobishi 3 Pair and on Skyline, moderately firm rolling terrain had formed and was topped with 5 to 10cm of light new snow. Continuing down via the groomed Kita-One forest road, Sakka Wave, and Sakka Slope, the consistently firm, easy-to-ski powder conditions held all the way to the bottom.
