With the National Student Ski Competition (Technical Ski Division) set to begin at Iwatake on 2/23 (Mon., holiday), more and more athletes have been training on Kamoshika. I met members of the Ritsumeikan University Kintaro Ski Club (pictured) who told me, “We’re a long-established club founded in 1971. We’re here for a training camp from 2/16 (Mon.) to 2/18 (Wed.) to prepare for the student championships.”

The second straight day of calm, clear weather brought a cold start to the morning, but the sunshine quickly made it more comfortable, and remnants of yesterday’s rime ice still clung to the trees near the summit. The South Slope (pictured) offered moderately firm groomed moist snow with a powdery feel, creating conditions that made it easy to link smooth, satisfying turns.

The East Slope delivered similarly firm, groomed moist snow with a powdery feel. Fewer people head there first thing in the morning when compared to the South Slope, so it’s a good option for carving fresh corduroy. On Sunny Valley, the well-compacted groomed moist snow had a few scattered snow clumps here and there on the surface.

At Spicy Rentals, located in the Base Center, I found not only skis and snowboards available for rent, but snowshoes as well (pictured; ¥4,000 per day including poles). In addition, daily snowshoe tours through Nezuko-no-Mori and Karamatsu-no-Mori are running through 3/29 (Sun.) (※¥8,000 for adults, ¥6,900 for elementary school students). In addition, the “Snow Walk with Your Dog” event will be held in Nezuko-no-Mori starting at 10:00 a.m. on 3/1 (Sun.).
