Dense fog covered the Mountain Side of the resort, as fine snow was falling steadily. I bumped into three S-CLASS season pass holders from Hyogo and Osaka (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports. The fog is so thick we feel like we might get lost.” Later, I ran into the woman from Hyogo again at the dog run (pictured, far left), and she added, “The fog is too thick, so we’re just going to play with our dogs.”

Another two visitors from the United States (pictured) told me, “We’re staying five nights at Hotel La Montagne Furuhata. We can’t see a thing in this fog—but we’re still having fun!” The East Slope (pictured) and South Slope both offered easy-to-ski conditions, with hardpacked, groomed moist bases lightly dusted with fresh snow.

VIEW C (pictured) featured firm groomed moist snow up top through the midsection, transitioning to harder groomed moist snow lower down. Even so, my edges held securely, and because the run is lined with trees, visibility was better than expected, making it easier to ski than elsewhere. The ungroomed steep runs, VIEW A and VIEW B, remained closed all day.

Sunny Valley (pictured) had a thin layer of fresh snow over top of firm groomed moist snow, and I broke below the cloud layer near the midsection. Most skiers this morning were lapping the gondola. On Kamoshika, I noticed many students training in preparation for the National Student Ski Competition Iwatake (Technical Ski Division), which begins on 2/23 (Mon., holiday).
