Gentle terrain covers more than half of Akakura Onsen Ski Resort, and calm bluebird days like today suit it perfectly. This morning brought a combination of sunshine, no wind, and pleasantly warm air. Early runs on the Panorama Course and Utopia A Course (pictured) offered moderately firm, easy-to-ski groomed granular snow.

Because Utopia A and B open at 9 a.m., you can enjoy one or two laps on Panorama or the Karamatsu Course first and still find clean corduroy waiting for you. After riding the Kumado 4th Triple back up, I dropped into Utopia B, where the moderately firm groomed granular snow made for smooth, confidence-inspiring turns.

Lessons for both snowboarders and skiers were underway on the Family Slope (pictured) and the Karamatsu Course. Both runs featured moderately firm, easy-to-ski groomed granular conditions. Meanwhile, Restaurant Montagne has added two new items to the menu starting in February: the Karaage (fried chicken) Set (¥1,500) and the Tonkatsu (fried breaded pork cutlet) Set (¥1,800)—both served freshly fried and piping hot.

I spoke with three guests from Saitama Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “We always read Snownavi! We like Akakura Onsen because the snow quality is good, the slopes are wide, and it’s not too crowded. We use your slope reports to help us decide where to ski. We’ve also been to Tsumagoi and Maiko.” By around 10 a.m., the groomed granular surface on the Downhill Central Course (pictured) had begun to soften.
