This year we didn’t get a three-day weekend around National Foundation Day, but luckily we have one coming up on 2/21 (Sat.) to 2/23 (Mon., holiday). With hotels fully booked at the base, it seems the crowds might be comparable to the New Year holiday period. First thing this morning, the Ginrei No. 3 Course (pictured) offered moderately firm granular snow conditions.

The Panorama Course was groomed into a moderately firm snow base from top to bottom. The upper portion (pictured) featured moist snow with a light mix of granular crystals, while the lower section was fully granular. My edges held cleanly, making it easy to link satisfying turns. Although calm, sunny weather has continued since yesterday, rime ice still clung to the trees across the upper portion of the resort.

The Silver Course, which branches off mid-Panorama, and the Ginrei No. 2 Slope matched the conditions on mid-to-lower Panorama with moderately firm, groomed moist snow. Radiational cooling brought a noticeable chill early in the morning, but once the lifts started spinning, the clear skies made for comfortable skiing.

A couple from Saitama Prefecture told me, “It’s been two years since we last skied at Akakura Onsen. Today’s snow surface feels a bit firm for us, but the slopes are wide open, so it’s easy to ski.” The Sekimi Slope (pictured) had a moderately firm, groomed moist snow base. By around 10 a.m., the surface on the Elegant Course, Downhill Central Course, and Slalom Course had begun to soften.
