March began under calm, mostly cloudy skies with occasional filtered sunshine. Kurohime Kogen Snow Park plans to close for the season on 3/22 (Sun.), which means only about three weeks remain. A very light snowfall fell overnight and into the morning, and a thin layer of slightly moist new snow covered the slopes.

When the No. 3 Pair lift started running at 9 a.m., the Kurohime Family Park quickly livened up, just like the other runs. The slopes had groomed, softened corn snow that made it easy to cruise at a relaxed pace on skis or sleds. A few small spots along the edges and near the tunnel showed some exposed ground, but overall snow coverage remained solid and I felt comfortable skiing.

With it being Sunday, Dog, Bull, Weasel, and the “Snow Dog Area” with its dog run were busy from early in the morning. On Dog, a gentle run that stretches about 1,000 meters, I smiled and watched as leashed dogs eagerly pulled their owners down the slope.

As part of the 72nd Annual Lerch Memorial events, the Kurohime Elementary & Junior High School Ski Technical Championships and the Kurohime Snowboard Technical Championships were held yesterday on 2/28 (Sat.), and today, 3/1 (Sun.), the Kurohime Skiers Cup (pictured) took place. Every course had groomed, softened corn snow with a slightly grabby feel underfoot.
