It was a warm and calm start to the day, under high clouds with sunlight filtering through. Before the lifts opened, I walked from the parking lot toward the No. 1 Quad and stepped onto the groomed snow. The surface had already softened so much, that my boots sank nearly 5 cm.
Leo (pictured) had groomed corn snow that had loosened and softened. The gentle opening pitch felt a little slow, but once I moved past the top section, the groomed surface ran better and I was able to link smooth, comfortable turns.

On Leo, I watched an instructor from the Kurohime Snowboarding School (pictured) lay down sharp, dynamic carving turns. I also saw other advanced riders drawing clean arcs across the groomed slope. The mogul lane on the skier’s right side around the midsection of Leo had just the right softness, size, and pitch. Another mogul lane sat on the skier’s left side of Dragon.

Mouse (pictured) had groomed corn snow that was nice and soft but still supportive. My edges gripped firmly on the groomed surface and I carried speed with confidence. A skier I rode the lift with told me, “I recently passed Level 2 and now I’m training for Level 1. Eventually I want to take the prize test. It’s great that I can practice on an official test run here.”

I spoke with a father from Saku City, Nagano (pictured) who told me, “It’s our first time here. I was surprised how much snow equipment is free to use. Even adults can have fun on sleds.” The sled that started slowly near the top picked up speed on the groomed, loose corn surface.
