Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2026.03.04170 cm / Cloudy

This morning, a lift attendant at the Alps No. 3 High-Speed Pair (pictured) told me, “Yesterday during the day, the weather kept changing—there was sleet and snow above the midsection of the Highway Course, and rain and sleet lower down—so not much ended up accumulating. The fresh snow you see now fell overnight.” It was a colder morning than yesterday, with light snow blowing through on a strong northerly wind.

As patches of blue sky appeared and sunshine began breaking through the clouds, the atmosphere felt even more refreshing. The ungroomed upper half of the Highway Course held about 5 cm of slightly moist new snow on top of a moderately firm, uneven base. The lower half of the Highway Course, the Kamoshika Course (pictured, left), and the Rabbit Course (pictured, far right background) were all groomed with moderately softened, moisture-rich snow, and my skis ran fast and turned smoothly lap after lap.

Warm temperatures since 2/21 (Sat.) have accelerated the snowmelt, forcing the lower section of the Satomi Ridge Course to close. Conditions on the Wakaguri Central Slope and Satomi Central Slope (pictured), which were both groomed with moderately softened moist snow, began to slow down slightly by around 10 a.m. A few thin snow spots had appeared on the Satomi Central Slope, but they were clearly marked with poles placed as a warning by patrol, and did not affect the skiing.

I ran into a couple from Kumamoto (pictured) who told me, “We traveled here from Kumamoto by Shinkansen and plane to come and ski. We come to the Hakuba area about once a year.” Around 10 a.m., snow clouds drifting in on the wind moved overhead and light snow began falling.

The direct shuttle bus to the ski area will operate 3/4 (Wed.) through 3/7 (Sat.) in conjunction with Snow Machine.
