It was a crisp and refreshing morning. With the peak summer season, 7/19 (Sat.) to 8/17 (Sun.), starting tomorrow, many people carrying large backpacks—likely hikers heading up to the alpine—could be seen at the base station of the Happo Gondola. Like the other trails on Happo, the boardwalk course (pictured), which opened on 7/8 (Tue.), is now completely free of snow.

I spoke with a hiker who said, “It’s nice that we can enjoy the mountain views without the sun being too strong or the temperature too high. The breeze along the ridge also feels great.” Along the entire Happo-one Nature Trail, flowers such as yamabuki shoma, yotsuba shiogama, and Tateyama utsubogusa are now at their peak. Around the No. 3 Cairn, miyama murasaki and hosoba tsumekusa were also beautifully in bloom.

On the west-side deck of the Happo Pond (pictured, left), people came and went, each hoping to capture a photo of the three major Hakuba Sanzan peaks reflected on the water. The surface of the water remained mostly calm, clearly mirroring the mountains. As the morning went on, the area around the pond grew livelier with visitors.

Even with some high, thin clouds, there were moments when Mt. Fuji could be seen to the east. Around 9:30 a.m., a group of students from the local Hakuba Junior High School arrived at the No. 3 Cairn on a school hike to Mt. Karamatsu. The owner of the Yamano Hotel, who was leading the group (pictured in a red shirt with his hand raised), commented, “It’s a perfect day for hiking.”
