The Happo-One Nature Trail was shrouded in mist as I started out this morning. However, a check of the live camera at Happo Pond showed clear skies above, so I quickened my pace as I climbed toward Shita-no-Kanba. I got my first faint glimpse of blue sky around the Shakujii Cairn, and after passing the No. 2 Cairn, the sky opened up fully. By the time I reached the area just before Shita-no-Kanba, I was greeted with magnificent autumn foliage (pictured).

“It feels like every angle is picture-perfect. I’ve been taking so many shots that I’m starting to worry about my memory card’s capacity,” was the comment from a man who was climbing alongside me. The occasional strong gusts of wind were chilly, and I felt cold with just a long-sleeved shirt, so I put on a jacket and took a short break. From there, I enjoyed the autumn foliage around the Ue-no-Kanba area and the Maruyama Cairn (pictured), while to my left Mt. Goryu floated above a sea of clouds.

The autumn colors were at their peak between the elevation of Happo Pond and Ue-no-Kanba. At the entrance to Ue-no-Kanba, a brilliantly crimson-colored nanakamado tree (pictured) seemed to symbolize the height of autumn. Along the way, several hikers greeted me warmly with comments like, “I always read Snownavi’s reports—we’re doing a day trip up and down Mt. Karamatsu today,” and, “Are you with Snownavi? The weather’s perfect and the foliage is just incredible today!”

Starting around 9:00 a.m., the south-side deck at Happo Pond was closed off due to work to remove accumulated sediment. A member of the patrol staff at work jokingly told me, “My back is killing me, haha.” Despite the pond being packed with visitors out for views of the autumn foliage, the usual quiet atmosphere was replaced with the lively shouts of the 76 local volunteers who took the lead in the cleanup effort.
