The autumn foliage at Happo is now in its final stage. Over the past ten days, sunshine hours have been less than half of the seasonal average, with frequent periods of rain, leaving the impression that this year’s foliage season ended rather abruptly. Still, with the first forecast of clear skies in a week, long lines formed this morning at the gondola and the Kurobishi Line before the start of business.
[Happo-One Nature Trail・Happo Cairn to Happo-ike]
I climbed up the Happo-One Nature Trail under a deep blue sky, taking in the crisp autumn air and the gentle sunlight, though the path under foot was still damp from yesterday’s rain. From the area around Happo-ike pond, the view toward the Kaerazu-no-Ken ridge (pictured) featured the striking white trunks of dakekanba birch trees. All around, I could hear people saying things like, “It’s beautiful,” and “I’m so glad we came today.”

Although slight ripples spread across the surface of Happo-ike, a stream of people came and went on the west-side deck, taking turns photographing the three major Hakuba Sanzan peaks reflected across the water. Two hikers I met, from Saitama and Yamanashi (pictured), told me, “The forecast called for clear skies, so we decided to take the day off and come up here. It’s absolutely perfect!”

As the morning went on, clouds began to rise and shift, constantly changing shape and adding dramatic accents to the ridgeline of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range. Despite it being a weekday, the area around Happo Pond and the No. 3 Cairn was as lively as ever around 10 a.m. The Kurobishi Line will remain in operation until this Sunday, 10/19, while the Happo Alpen Line will continue running until 11/3 (Mon., holiday).
