On the morning of 10/23 (Thu.), as the first snowfall of the season was being recorded on Mt. Fuji, Hakuba enjoyed perfectly clear skies. Thanks to strong radiative cooling, the temperature at the Grat Quad lift station was a brisk 5°C at 8:30 a.m. Over at the Kama-ike Marsh, the boardwalk was sparkling with frost in the morning sunlight (pictured), and a thin layer of ice had formed over puddles in the area—meaning temperatures must have dropped below freezing overnight and earlier in the morning.

Although the air was crisp, the sunlight and total lack of wind kept it from feeling chilly as I started climbing. The band of autumn colors had descended to around 1,300 to 1,400 meters in elevation, stretching between the upper gondola line and Usagidaira, and made for a beautiful view from the ridge route (pictured). Meanwhile, gazing upward towards the higher peaks, the landscape there had already taken on the look of early winter.

Near the No. 3 Cairn, I was greeted by Mr. Idachi, the store manager of THE NORTH FACE GRAVITY HAKUBA store (pictured, far right), with a friendly, “Snownavi, thank you for all your great work!” He continued telling me, “I’m using my day off to do a day hike up to Mt. Karamatsu with some friends.” Many other hikers were also making their way up toward the Shita-no-Kanba area, where the bare white trunks of dakekanba birch trees stood out beautifully against the autumn landscape.

Today, the south-side deck at Happo Pond was once again packed with visitors eager to capture the Hakuba Sanzan peaks reflected on the water’s surface. Meanwhile, a series of Halloween Events will be held at the gondola base station on 10/25 (Sat.), 10/26 (Sun.), and 10/31 (Fri.). On 10/25 (Sat.), the “Echoland Trick or Treat” event will take place in Echoland starting atg 1:00 p.m., followed by the 3:00 p.m. “Halloween Skate Jam” at the base area’s Blizzard restaurant.
