Happo REPORT

2025.10.29Happo-One / Partly Cloudy

The first snowfall of the season was observed in both the Tateyama and Ushiro-Tateyama mountain ranges on 10/27 (Mon.). The following day, 10/28 (Tue.), reports of snow came in not only from Happo, Tsugaike, and Goryu47, but also from other ski resorts across Japan, including Shiga Kogen, Kagura, Marunuma Kogen, Oze-Iwakura, and Geto Kogen. Eager to see the snow, I hiked from Kurobishi-daira up to Happo Pond (pictured) on 10/29 (Wed.), walking through freshly fallen snow along the way.

On both the Happo-One Nature Trail and the Ridge Route, 5 to 10 cm of snow had frozen onto the rocks and boardwalks, making the early sections quite slippery. It seemed that strong winds had blown through the day before, as the untouched areas of snow displayed beautiful wind-formed ripples (pictured). In some areas, more than 20 cm of fine, powdery snow had accumulated in drifts.

The south-side deck at the Happo-ike Pond was packed with people eagerly waiting for the clouds covering the Hakuba Sanzan peaks to clear. There I met a man from Hakuba Village, who called out, “I always read your reports! Could you take a photo of these two visitors from overseas? And please get a shot of me skiing for the Happo slope report sometime during the season!” The two guests he pointed to said, “We’re from Germany, and are deeply moved by the breathtaking scenery!”

Beyond Happo-ike and the No. 3 Cairn, I could see hikers continuing up the trail toward Mt. Karamatsu (pictured). The green season at Hakuba Happo-One runs through 11/3 (Mon., holiday), but this marks the final edition of our 2025 summer trekking reports. Thank you very much for following along this season, and we’ll see you again for our winter Slope Reports!
