Tsugaike REPORT

2024.01.03120cm / Cloudy

It was a calm start to the day, with thin clouds covering the sky. As of 9:30 a.m., the central parking lot was full on both the west and east sides of the road. Incidentally, a new reservation only day use parking lot has been opened next to the gondola base station this season. This parking lot is recommended for those who would like the convenience of reserving a parking spot close to the slopes on crowded weekends, holidays, etc. (*JPY2,000 per day, 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

The groomed Tsuga-no-mori Slope (1st photo) and the area alongside the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair Lift (pictured) had nice, firmly groomed powder snow surfaces! I was able to set my edges and enjoy skiing at speed. I spoke with a father from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “We’re here staying and snowboarding for 10 days since the start of the end of the year holiday period. My son is so eager to board that he keeps going off by himself.”

As we skied down to the middle of the Han-no-ki Slope, the snow quality changed to harder, groomed wet snow. I chatted briefly with a group of four snowboarders from Aichi (pictured), who said they check Snownavi from time to time, and added, “We’re here for 5 days starting today. We’re looking forward to getting more snow tonight!” The Sawa Course (pictured), which branches off of Han-no-ki, was free of bushes and other obstacles, although there were some clumps of snow in areas.

Shirakaba, Maruyama, and Oya-no-hara were all ungroomed, but all had firm, mostly flat surfaces that weren’t hard to ski. I did speak with a member of the ski patrol who cautioned me to be careful to not fall and hurt myself since the slopes were hard. The Oya-no-hara Slope was busy with families, beginners, and novice skiers.
