Iwatake REPORT

2024.03.06170cm / Snowy

Today is the final day of the individual competition of the National Student Iwatake Skiing Competition. I spoke with Yamato Nagata (pictured, right) of the Hokkaido University Demonstration Skiing Team, who was in first position after yesterday’s competition, and he told me, “I’ve still managed to stay in first after the first run of the downhill, and I will do my best on the next run to extend my lead before the third run!” Eisho Takahashi (pictured, left), a member of the Hokkai-Gakuen University Demonstration Skiing Club and the 2nd place competitor came and said, “Please let me be in the picture too!”

The snow coming down on the Village Side before 8:00 a.m. was similar to sleet, but when I went up to the Mountain Side, it turned to wet snow with large flakes. There were moderately-strong gusts of westerly winds from time to time, but the temperature was mild and I didn’t feel cold. I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns on the South Slope (pictured) and the Sawa Course, where 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow was on top of moderately packed, groomed wet snow bases.

The ungroomed Hikage Course (pictured) had 10 to 15 cm of slightly heavy fresh snow. Deep tracks and surfac bumps marked the surface, but the base wasn’t hard, make it easy to manage. The Sunny Valley and other courses on the Village Side were groomed with moderately soft wet snow surfaces, with about 1 cm of moist fresh snow on them.

Momoka Hayashi (pictured), a member of the Fuji Women’s University Ski Club who placed first in yesterday’s women’s competition, told me, “I was not very good on my first run. I will try my best in the remaining two runs.” At 10:00 a.m. on the Village Side, the sleet-like snow that had been falling was now coming down as snow with large flakes.
