REPORT

Yesterday I covered HAPPO PARKS, but I also wanted to share how conditions looked around the rest of the resort, so here’s a follow-up report from the early morning of 1/17 (Sat.). With all of the lifts above Usagidaira and Skyline shut down all day on 1/16 (Fri.), untouched snow still remained along the Alpen Quad (pictured) in the morning. Seeing the slopes back to a brilliant white—so different from yesterday’s yellow sand—was an instant mood boost.

I skied comfortably down the well-set groomed powder at the top of Usagidaira and headed over toward the Alpen Quad (pictured). Despite how inviting it looked, the surface had a 2 to 3cm crust on top, and the impact from the firm underlying rollers knocked me off balance and I nearly took a big spill. Still, this being Happo, so many advanced skiers skied straight, aggressive tracks in the same area one after another without issue.

I met four visitors from Tokyo and Kanagawa (pictured) who called out, “We always follow your reports—we finally got to meet you! The groomed runs feel great today.” Above Usagidaira, the Riesen Grat Course looked just as tempting, with a smooth, untouched surface. (The small black dots along the ridgeline on the right are hikers heading into the backcountry.)

The Kurobishi Slope (pictured) also offered a groomed powder surface with just the right amount of firmness, making it very easy to ski. With it being the weekend, I received plenty of friendly call-outs from people while riding the lifts. The groomed sections of the Skyline Course had moderately firm powder as well, while the Kita-One forest road—where some yellow sand residue was still visible—was groomed with wet snow that had set up nicely.
