On 1/17 (Sat.), a Snowshoe Route (PDF) opened, running back and forth between Shirayuki-Daira (pictured) and the top of Lake Down. The route is marked with numbered signs to help guide the way. Even if you arrive empty-handed, you can rent a snowshoe and pole set (pictured) at the Castor Plaza rental corner or at Snow Friends Park for ¥2,500 for adults and ¥1,500 for elementary school children.

This morning there was almost no wind, and fine-grained snow was coming down lightly. Lake Down (pictured) and Lake View had about 1 cm of light fresh snow, covering a firm, machine-groomed wet snow base. Perhaps due to strong winds overnight, there were some fallen leaves and branches scattered across the slopes, but they didn’t interfere with skiing, and I was able to enjoy smooth, comfortable, fast runs.

I met a skier from Mie Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “I always read your reports! I’m a HAKUBA VALLEY season pass holder, and I came back to Hakuba Sanosaka for the first time in a while to enjoy the amazing views of Lake Aoki.” With an early visitor turnout typical of a Sunday, Parking Lot No. 1 and Parking Lot No. 3 were already full, and Parking Lot No. 2 was about 80% full as of 9:30 a.m.

On the skiers’ right side of Lake Down and Lake View, slalom training was underway by members of the JSC Hakuba Sanosaka Racing Center. Paradise and Paradise Downhill also featured firm, machine-groomed wet snow, although some clumps of snow were visible on the surface around the upper section of Paradise Downhill.
