Sanosaka REPORT

2026.01.22100 cm / Snowy

I had sworn not to drop into New Paradise, the steep slope at the very top of the resort, until the run was filled with perfectly smooth, untouched snow. I met a group of three from Hakuba Village (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports. We came to Hakuba Sanosaka on instinct, and it turned out to be the perfect choice—there’s plenty of powder and hardly anyone around. Sanosaka is the best!”

On the vast ungroomed slope on the north side of the 5th Pair lift (pictured), an area of Hakuba Sanosaka that is known for being sheltered from the wind, an impressive 30 to 40 cm of light, fluffy new snow had accumulated. Once I dropped in, I enjoyed a wonderful sense of float without bottoming out on the underlying terrain. Dry snow was still falling this morning as well, yet there was absolutely no wind to be felt.

On the groomed south side of the 5th Pair lift (pictured, right side, beyond the lift), about 20 cm of light fresh snow had fallen. In the bitter cold of the season’s lowest temperature so far, at −12°C, large plumes of snow sprayed up behind each skier on their way down. Paradise, Paradise Downhill, Lake Down, and Lake View, were each topped with 15 to 20 cm of light new snow, and were all machine-groomed packed powder that was set just right and very easy to ski.

Earlier in the morning, I met a couple from Australia (pictured) who told me, “Oh, Snownavi! Very nice! We’ve been staying in Hakuba and skiing for two weeks. It’s our first time at Hakuba Sanosaka—this powder is amazing!” On the Carving Slope as well, the moderately firm machine-groomed packed powder was topped with about 20 cm of light fresh snow, making for thoroughly enjoyable runs.
