This morning, I met a man from Tokyo (pictured) whom I run into every season, and he told me, “I always read your reports. I’ve been coming to Hakuba Sanosaka for over 40 years, ever since I was in elementary school.” (More than 40 years—impressive!) He added with a smile, “Whenever I see a Snownavi reporter, I make a point of giving them some sweets,” and sure enough, I received some chocolate this morning. I’m thinking of it as a slightly early Valentine’s Day treat.

The snow that had been falling early in the morning stopped around 8 a.m., and the sun began to break through. I spoke with a man from Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture who told me, “I always read your reports. Today is incredibly easy to ski—carving feels great. By the way, this snowboard is the “Banana or Pineapple” from THE DAY.HAKUBA.” Lake Down (pictured) and Lake View both featured moderately firm, easy-to-ski machine-groomed packed powder.

I also ran into the owner of Kuni’s Country Kitchen in Omachi City (pictured), who commented, “Thanks for your hard work. I come up to ski almost every morning before work. Even on telemark skis, today’s conditions are very easy to ski—but I’d better head back soon…” On the groomed New Paradise that I skied afterward, mogul lanes had formed along the 5th Pair lift.

Before operations began, I had a chat with two visitors from Gifu Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports. We’re here today to take a lesson with pro skier Makoto Kuroki. The conditions look fantastic, so we’re really looking forward to it!” The Carving Slope (pictured) and Paradise both offered moderately firm, extremely easy-to-ski machine-groomed packed powder.
