I started reporting today at 10:30 a.m., which is a little later than usual. By that time, the light snow that had been falling through the morning had eased off, and patches of blue sky began to open up overhead. The Nakiyama Snowland beginner slope (pictured), located at the base of the Nakiyama Slope, was groomed to the same standard as the main runs and offered soft, easy-to-practice powder conditions. There I caught sight of a young boy from Tokyo (pictured), who was taking a skiing lesson using small cones.

On the opposite (east) side of the moving belt, the sledding slope (pictured) offers free use of plastic sleds, various handle-equipped sleds, tubes, and other snow-play gear. Down at the base, there is also a small inflatable play area, making it a space where children of different ages can enjoy themselves without getting bored. Admission to Nakiyama Snowland is ¥1,500 for both adults and for children aged three through elementary school.

The 80 m moving belt (pictured) can be used either with skis on or while carrying skis or sleds, and its covered design keeps things comfortable even on snowy days. The nearby building operated by the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School is open to everyone and includes a warm rest area, reception, changing rooms, coin lockers, a nursing room, and a kids’ space.

On the north side of Nakiyama Snowland is a food-truck area known as Mogumogu Hiroba, where several food trucks are set up on a regular basis. Popular items from Azumino Shokudo include the Fried Rice & Karaage (fried chicken) Set (pictured, ¥1,300) and Gyoza (¥1,200 for 10 pieces). The number of food trucks and available items varies by the day.
