A truly clear morning like this one is a rare sight, and looking back through the records, the last one was on 1/17 (Sat.). This morning, the Sunny Valley Course (pictured) featured moderately firm groomed powder up top, transitioning to firmer groomed powder through the mid to lower sections. Radiational cooling made the early morning hours quite cold, but with no wind and plenty of sunshine, conditions quickly became comfortable.

I ran into two visitors from Omachi City (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports. We’re Hakuba Valley season pass holders, and with weather like this, we thought, ‘It has to be Iwatake.’ The groomed runs are amazing!” I have to agree, and it was hard not to keep lapping the full 3,300 m length of Sunny Valley via the gondola with such great groomers.

Although I haven’t been able to show the full scope previously, as you can see, the Iwatake Snow Park has been immaculately groomed every day. Once the park opened today, riders began dropping in one after another. The South Slope also delivered outstanding conditions, with moderately firm groomed powder that was a pleasure to ski.

I crossed paths with a Japanese-Brazilian guide (pictured, far left), who told me, “I know Snownavi well. I stay in Hakuba during the winter and work as a guide. Today I’ll be enjoying the groomed runs with guests from the U.S.” From the Mountain Side of the resort, I was treated to sweeping alpine views, including the three major Hakuba Peaks (pictured).
