Iwatake Snow Park (pictured), reopened on 1/24 (Sat.) after undergoing a full rebuild from 1/19 (Mon.) to 1/23 (Fri.). The park now features a total of 15 elements, including three 6 m kickers, a 3 m kicker, a mini kicker, a narrow box, flat & down rails, a 10 m rail, a rail, a 7.5 m down rail, a donkey rail, a “nanafushi” rail, a box, a PVC feature, and an end wall. This morning, low clouds hung over the park, with light, dry snow falling steadily.

At the 6 m kickers (pictured), I enjoyed watching advanced riders launch effortlessly into the air. In addition to Iwatake’s excellent park maintenance, the well-compacted powder surface made it easy to build speed and approach every feature with confidence. I also spotted beginners testing the mini kicker and the 3 m kicker.

The flat & down rail may appear to be perfectly aligned in the photo, but the down rail (right) is actually offset slightly to the left after the flat rail (left), allowing riders to transfer between features. The park can be lapped efficiently using the 5-Sen South high-speed quad lift.

Later I enjoyed a warm drink at CHAVATY HAKUBA, a specialty shop for tea lattes and freshly baked scones located at the base of South Slope, while looking out over Hakuba Village. The Kumazasa Matcha Cream Scone Sandwich (¥480) and the Shinshu Apple & Hojicha (roasted green tea) Apple Cider (¥680) are currently on offer, and the rime ice on the trees in the foreground this morning was especially beautiful.
