At the summit area this morning, dry snow was coming down hard, driven by a strong, cold northwesterly wind. Occasional gusts lifted and swirled the snow that had already settled on the slopes. To get out of the wind, I dropped into VIEW D (pictured), where conditions immediately felt calmer. The wind all but disappeared, the surrounding trees coated in rime ice were easy on the eyes, and I was able to relax and enjoy smooth, unhurried turns.

VIEW C and VIEW D (pictured) both offered well-compacted groomed powder topped with about 10 cm of light new snow. The ungroomed sections along the edges of the runs held 20 to 30 cm of fresh snow. As I rode back up on the View lift, cheers echoed across the slopes from riders enjoying the ungroomed VIEW A and VIEW B runs, as well as the nearby tree areas.

I spoke with an instructor from the Hakuba Iwatake Snowboard School (pictured), who said, “This is a class for second-year students from Hakuba High School. Since everyone already knows how to ski, no one is taking ski lessons. With conditions like this, it’s perfect for training.” The South Slope (pictured) and Sawa Course both featured well-compacted groomed powder topped with 5 to 10 cm of light new snow.

I met a couple from Saitama (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports! We’re Iwatake season pass holders and come here often. The fresh snow feels incredibly light and fluffy today—it’s fantastic.” The Sunny Valley Course skied smoothly, with a firm groomed powder base and some harder patches only around the snowmaking equipment.
