That happened fast. Already, about half of the season has come and gone. Compared to January, the cold temperatures ease off and the weather becomes more stable from February through early March, and with solid snow coverage remaining, it’s an ideal time both for skiing and for enjoying winter mountain sightseeing. With calm, clear skies for the second day in a row, the bright white outline of the three major Hakuba Peaks to the west (pictured) left a strong impression on me this morning.

The South Slope (pictured) and East Slope both offered easy-to-ski conditions with moderately firm groomed powder bases. The South Slope in particular felt exhilarating when carving big, open turns across its wide, airy terrain. Sunny Valley featured well-compacted groomed powder up top, transitioning to firmer groomed moist snow lower down.

As you can see, the North Slope is currently being used for a 15-minute loop course for Buggy Cruise rides (pictured; 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). I spoke with two visitors from Hiroshima who commented, “The buggy was a lot of fun—we even asked for a more aggressive ride, haha. It’s her first time at Iwatake, which she’s always wanted to visit. The view from HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR was incredible and really moving.”

Three visitors from Oita (pictured) told me, “Today is the only day we can snowboard at Iwatake on this quick, in-and-out trip. The scenery is so beautiful that we came up to take some photos.” The terrace was filled with the sweet aroma of freshly baked cookies, and was quiet and relaxing. The City Bakery’s popular Hakuba Pork Croissant Sandwich (¥1,350) and two other sandwich options go on sale daily starting at 10:30 a.m.
