It feels like we’ve had more windy days than usual this season. With the start of the gondola delayed this morning, I headed up via the Nakiyama Triple and the Happo Riesen Quad, both of which were running on time, and made my way to Usagidaira. As of 8:30 a.m., the wind in front of Usagidaira Terrace was only moderate, but judging by the way the groomer tracks had been broken up, strong winds must have blown through overnight and into the early morning.

The entrance to the Riesen Slalom Course had a hard-packed, groomed wet-snow surface. Continuing through the mid section, the grooming was firm and the snow had a distinctly powdery feel, while the groomed lower section had a wet-snow base that was harder once again. A skier I met along the way commented, “Compared to yesterday, the slopes feel firmer today.”

From the Panorama Course, which also had groomed wet snow with a powdery feel, I skied down Olympic Course II, which had an irregular, uneven surface, and continued on to the Sakka Slope (pictured). At Sakka, the moderately firm groomed wet snow had a slightly moist surface. Later on, the gondola began operating around 9:00 a.m., followed by the Kokusai 3 Pair at about 9:15 and the Panorama Pair around 9:30.

The fourth installment in this season’s Cafeteria Yeti menu feature highlights the “Fluffy Omelet Chicken Rice” (pictured, ¥1,750). Creamy scrambled eggs made with plenty of fresh cream pair perfectly with the lightly seasoned chicken rice, all topped with a rich hayashi-style beef and onion sauce. I devoured mine in no time.
