Just as the forecast had suggested, the final day of the three-day holiday weekend brought severe weather. I ran into a group lined up early for the Nakiyama Triple (pictured), who told me, “We always follow your reports—days like this must be tough for Snownavi.” Powerful winds occasionally whipped snow high into the air, at times creating full whiteout conditions.

“I’ve never seen winds this strong all season. I wonder if the lifts will even run,” was the comment from a Happo regular. In fact, when the Nakiyama 2 Pair started at 8:25 a.m., followed by the Nakiyama Triple at 8:30 a.m., it was a huge relief. I spoke with four visitors from Osaka Prefecture (pictured) who also called out, saying, “We always follow your reports. You can actually see how strong the wind is when the snow gets blown into the air.”

The lower section of Riesen (pictured) had a firm, groomed powder surface, while Nakiyama featured a firm, groomed wet-snow surface. On the Nakiyama Public Course, the areas around the snowmaking machines felt firmer, so I tried to maintain strong edge control as I skied. I crossed paths with a skier from Tokyo who told me, “The Nakikabe had 20 to 25cm of new snow that was wind-packed, but the base was fairly smooth, so it was still a lot of fun.”

We’ve previously featured the Sangen Pork Thick-Cut Katsu Curry and the Shoyu Chashu Ramen, but it turns out the most popular item at Cafeteria Yeti is the “Azumino Wasabi Roast Beef Bowl” (pictured, ¥2,300, served with miso soup). The roast beef is slowly cooked at low temperature, and paired beautifully with the homemade sweet soy-based sauce, plain yogurt, egg yolk, and finely chopped Azumino wasabi. It was excellent!
