Hakunori still has plenty of snow! (I feel like I may have written that before…) The day began with calm, sunny skies, and after taking the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair up, I looked down at the beautifully groomed Wakaguri Central Slope and Cross Course (pictured) and thought, how could I not drop in? The early-morning turnout was slow, but don’t get the wrong idea—Hakunori’s runs really are great.

It was warm again this morning, and temperatures climbed above 0°C soon after the resort opened. Early on, the Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured), the Kamoshika Course, and the Wakaguri Forest Course were groomed with moderately firm granular snow surfaces. My edges bit cleanly, my skis ran fast, and I was able to carve exactly the turns I wanted.

Just after 9 a.m., the groomed granular surfaces on the Satomi Central Slope and the Satomi Ridge Course had a loose, sandy texture that allowed my edges to sink in deeply. I met two guests from Australia (pictured) who said, “Are you taking our photo? Thanks! We’re spending a week in Hakuba enjoying snowboarding. We love Hakuba!” (And you love Hakunori too, right?)

The first run I took down the Highway Course was on firm, groomed granular snow, but by the time I dropped into the Rabbit Course (pictured) just after 8:30 a.m., the surface had already begun to soften. At this time of year, when the snow softens quickly, weekend runs tend to become chopped up early—making the morning hours especially valuable.
