Cloud cover filled the sky when the Alps No. 3 High-Speed Pair started spinning at 8 a.m. The temperature sat at 6°C—clearly warm—but with limited sun, the air still felt cool. The Rabbit Course (pictured), Wakaguri Central Slope, Wakaguri Forest Course, and Kamoshika Course were all fully groomed and already skiing as soft, loosened corn from the start.

As usual, the morning crowd trickled in slowly. I lapped the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair three times and had no trouble laying down clean lines on the freshly groomed corduroy on Rabbit (pictured) and Wakaguri Central. The Highway Course was also fully groomed, with moderately firm corn that held an edge well. I engaged my edges, and carried good speed smoothly from top to bottom.

The Hakunori Cross Course (pictured) featured a groomed base with ungroomed berms. Riders carried speed through the top and mid sections by driving into the left and right banks, and a few advanced skiers launched cleanly off the final wave feature. The cloud layer gradually thinned, and filtered sunlight began breaking through around 9 a.m.

I was greeted with the familiar “I always read your reports!” from a student at Kyoto Institute of Technology (pictured). He told me, “The rest of the ski team is competing in the Technical Ski division of the Student Ski Competition Iwatake. I’m staying back to train for my ski certification test. Even though the snow has that loose corn texture, it still grips really well, so it’s easy to ski.”
