Because of this season’s warm winter and low snowfall, the snowmelt on the lower slopes is around three weeks ahead of last season. As such, the Kane-no-naru-oka Slope closed on 3/22 (Sun.), followed by the Champion Slope on 3/23 (Mon.). Starting today, skiing is limited to five slopes—Han-no-ki, Maruyama, Shirakaba, Karamatsu, and Oya-no-hara—plus the upper sections of the forest course.

That said, the roughly 5 km long run accessed by the 4,120 m gondola, one of the longest in Japan, is still intact. Since spring discounts kicked in yesterday (adult 1-day pass ¥6,100, elementary school students ¥3,800), you can enjoy the long run at a reduced price through at least the end of this week. Along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair (pictured), the surface was a moderately softened granular groomer that skied smoothly.
[Han-no-ki Slope]
By the time I reached the midsection of Han-no-ki (pictured), the surface had changed to slick, groomed granular snow, and the further down I went, the thicker the softened layer became. However, there were no thin spots or exposed brush all the way down to the gondola mid-station. The air was cool, and the skies were calm and partly cloudy, and the snow ran well, allowing me to carry speed comfortably.

The Maruyama Slope (pictured) had a dry, loose granular groomed surface, with a thin spot in the midsection and exposed dirt on the gentle lower pitch. The Karamatsu and Oya-no-hara Slopes had chunkier, more softened groomed granular snow. The official snow depth is down to 17 cm here, but neither slope had any bushes showing in the groomed sections, so coverage felt secure.
