This morning, light rain was falling at the base, but changed to snow just before I reached the top, and wet snow was falling lightly at Usagidaira (pictured). A patrol member I met early in the morning said, “About 10cm of wet snow has accumulated on the upper part of Usagidaira. It’s heavy and difficult to turn in, so be careful.”

I ran into a skier from Mie Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “I always read your reports. I’m glad it’s snowing up top. Riesen and Skyline were ungroomed, so I came to Kurobishi, but my skis aren’t running well. By the way, today is my 92nd day on snow this season. I’m aiming for 100 days!” Along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), 2 to 3cm of fresh snow that slowed the skis lay over a loose granular groomed surface.

The fog over the upper mountain cleared after about 30 minutes. On the ungroomed south-side route at Usagidaira, about 10cm of wet new snow covered loose rollers and moguls. A snowboarder who entered the run said, “My board wouldn’t glide, and I almost went head first, haha.”

By the time I reached the Panorama Course (pictured), the snow had turned back to rain. The loose granular groomer here allowed the skis to run well, in contrast to Kurobishi. With no exposed brush or thin snow coverage down to the base, I was able to carry speed comfortably all the way down.
