This morning, hazy skies brought a spring-like feel to the resort. The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had loose groomed granular snow from the start of the day, and the soft surface layer grew thicker toward the bottom. On the Usuba section near the end, exposed dirt had spread across the skiers’ right side, while the skiers’ left side still had solid snow coverage thanks to snowmaking.

Visitors turnout was good early with a sunny weekend forecast. Before the lifts began running, the gondola base station was already busy with skiers, snowboarders, and many mountaineers carrying large packs. About 30 minutes after opening, the south-side route at Usagidaira (pictured) had begun to break down into heavier, more cut-up granular snow.

The run along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) held moderately firm groomed granular snow and offered the best conditions of the morning. A skier I met said, “The surface snow on Riesen was already loose first thing, but it’s more set here and skis better.” The Skyline Course had the same moderately firm groomed granular surface, but it softened progressively toward the bottom.

Medium-to-large moguls covered the slopes along the Alpen Quad (pictured) and the Kurobishi 3 Pair. A skier coming down the Alpen Quad line said, “Some sections felt a bit crusty, so it might ski better once it softens more.”
