On 10/7 (Tue), the Wakkanai Local Meteorological Observatory announced the first snow of the season on Mt. Rishiri (elevation 1,721m). As such, for the second year in a row, Mt. Rishiri is the first mountain in Japan to record snow in the lead up to winter! This year’s observation came 4 days later than average (10/3) and 15 days later than last year (9/22).
*Technically the first snow of the season fell on Daisetsuzan’s Mt. Kurodake (elevation 1,984m) in Hokkaido on 9/21 (Sun.), but Mt. Asahidake (elevation 2,291m), which is the official observation point for the Asahikawa Local Meteorological Observatory, has yet to record its first snow.
