Before operations began this morning, I met a skier from Matsumoto at the Line-8 base station, who told me, “I always read your reports. We’ve had some really good cold temperatures lately.” Snow has been falling every day between 12/30 (Tue.) and today, with especially low temperatures settling in yesterday and again this morning. I rode Line-C when it started running at 8:20 and headed toward the upper section of Route 1 (pictured), as light, dry snow drifted down around me.
[Upper Route 1]
The upper section of Route 1 was groomed into a well-set, powder-packed snow surface that had 3 to 5 cm of light new snow on top. Each time a skier set an edge, soft plumes of snow spray drifted into the air. From the lower section of Route 1, where 2 to 3 cm of light new snow sat on top of a firm, groomed moist snow base, the areas of exposed brush and thin snow coverage had disappeared (meaning all courses are now brush-free!).
[Upper Route 1]
On the lower section of Route 8, a snowboarder in white sent up a large, soft plume of snow behind them (pictured), right in front of the camera. The snow today was incredibly light. With 3 to 5 cm of light new snow on top of the groomed areas, Routes 5, 6, and the upper and lower sections of Route 8 all offered superb, moderately firm powder conditions, letting me carve exactly the lines I wanted.

A woman from Shiga Prefecture whom I rode up with on Line-C told me, “The upper section of Route 1 first thing this morning was amazing! Today’s grooming feels great everywhere.” Meanwhile, a man who had just skied down Route 2 said, “The surface was uneven in areas, and the base felt a bit firm in places, but it was easier to ski than I expected.”
