This middle day of the three-day weekend coincided with the strongest cold air mass of the season, resulting in high winds that forced operations to be suspended on the upper mountain, including the Alps 1st Pair, Alps 3rd Pair, Alps 2nd & 4th Pairs, and Line-E. In addition, the 1st High-Speed Pair did not begin operating until around 9:50 a.m. due to icing. Meanwhile, the Powder Snow Course (pictured) featured groomed firm moist snow topped with 2 to 3 cm of light new snow.

I ran into two visitors from Tokyo (pictured, both sides of the photo), who told me, “We always read your reports! We’ve been skiing at Goryu 47 over the three-day weekend, while getting tips from a local (pictured, center).” The Sunny Way Course had 3 to 4 cm of light new snow, on top of a groomed, firm moist snow surface, while DISCOVERY SPORT, DEFENDER, and DISCOVERY were left ungroomed.

The “Step-Up Land” in front of the Iimori Base Center opens every morning at 9:00 a.m. For an admission fee of JPY1,000 (free for lift ticket holders), you can spend the entire day playing with sleds and snow-play gear, or practicing skiing and snowboarding. I met a mother from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “I brought my five-year-old daughter to a ski school in Anjo City, and today we split up so she can just enjoy playing in the snow.”

The Soft Cream Course and Merry Land Course (pictured), like the Powder Snow Course, featured groomed firm moist snow topped with 2 to 3 cm of light new snow. I had a conversation with a couple from Shizuoka Prefecture, who commented, “We always check Snownavi! We love Hakuba and come to ski mainly at Goryu 47.” With the delayed opening, I was able to draw fresh tracks through about 3 cm of untouched new snow, making for a very satisfying run.
