As a low-pressure system moved northeast over the Sea of Japan and a winter pressure pattern set in, last night’s rain turned to snow, and light, dry snow was still falling this morning. Before operations began, a mother from Azumino City (pictured) told me, “Jigatake Ski Resort is only a 30 to 40 minute drive from our home, so we come here often. My daughter really enjoys sledding.”

The Raicho Course (pictured) had very smooth, easy-to-ski conditions, with about 2 cm of fresh snow on top of well-compacted, moist snow grooming. I spoke to a father from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured, second from left) who told me, “I always read your reports. About ten years ago, when I was a student, I actually appeared in one of the slope reports myself.”

The neighboring Rabbit Course (pictured), along with the Kamoshika Course and Echo Slope, all featured well-compacted, moist groomed snow topped with 2 to 3 cm of fresh snowl. With the officially reported base depth still relatively shallow at 75 cm, some bushes were visible along the sides and on embankments, but there were no thin snow spots on any of the five open slopes.

In the Kids Park, sleds were running smoothly on well-compacted, moist groomed snow. With it being the middle day of a three-day weekend, the area was lively, and there was a short 2 to 3 minute wait to ride the troika. By the way, the “Yukimaji Campaign” will start on 1/13 (Tue.), offering free lift tickets for skiers and snowboarders aged 19 to 22 on Tuesdays through Thursdays, excluding public holidays). In addition, next Sunday, 1/18, is a “Ski Kids’ Day,” when lift tickets for junior high school students and younger will be available for only JPY1,000.
