Today I met a family from Nagano City (pictured) who told me, “We come to Kurohime quite often. My dog’s rounded face shrinks a bit when her fur gets wet and flattens out, but she still seems totally fine, haha. Alright, we’re off!” This morning, plenty of dogs were happily playing together at the dog run near the top station of the No. 7 Pair.

Around 7:30 a.m., the wind picked up and the snow began coming down sideways, but by around 9:00 a.m. it eased off, and there were moments when patches of blue sky appeared overhead (pictured). A staff member from the Hakuba Village Ski Club, who rode the No. 1 Quad with me, commented, “We’re here today and tomorrow with four Nagano Prefecture Ski Federation development athletes (pictured) and using a private, reserved slope for practice. Every groomed run is very well maintained and extremely easy to ski.”

Leo and Monkey (pictured) had less than 1 cm of moist new snow, on top of well-set, groomed wet snow bases, and in some spots, the moisture did slow my skis down. The brief appearance of blue sky and sunshine was short-lived, and as the day went on, the snow and wind strengthened, covering over the groomed corduroy.

I spoke with an instructor from the Kurohime Ski School (pictured, far right), who told me, “On the first day, many of the kids couldn’t ski at all, but by today, the third day, everyone is able to ski. Please be sure to take some photos for us.” One of the students also added with a big smile, “Now that I can ski, it’s really fun!” The Dog Course was lively and busy with a young group lesson.
