Dry snow was falling on and off this morning, carried by a light northerly breeze. Overnight snowfall totaled only about 1cm, but the strong cold snap continued, and my fingers began to sting as I held my camera for photos. On Course 1-A, the upper to middle sections offered moderately soft, powdery groomed snow, while the steep lower section (pictured) was a well-set, firm powder groomer.

If you hop on the 2nd Pair at 8:30 a.m., you can lay down first tracks on the Kurosawa Slope (pictured) or Ippon Buna Downhill. Then, by catching the 1st Quad starting at 9 a.m., you can be first onto Course 1-A or Courses 1-B and 1-C. Kurosawa had nicely set, easy-to-ski powder conditions, and being a weekday in January, visitor numbers were light, allowing the fresh grooming lines to remain intact for quite some time.

A woman visiting from Matsumoto City, Nagano (pictured, center), told me, “I think I’ve seen Snownavi before. This is my first time back at Kashimayari in six days… Oh, and could you take a photo with my phone too?” After one run, she also commented, “The snow feels a bit firm today. I need to be careful not to fall.”

The groomed Maruyama Slope and Course 5-A also featured well-set, groomed powder surfaces (some may find them hard-packed), while the medium- to large-sized moguls covering the entirety of Courses 5-B and 5-C were likewise made up of nicely compacted powder. At Pokémon Snow Adventure (pictured), an elementary school group from Azumino City began an outdoor school activity starting around 10 a.m.
