Today and tomorrow, the lower half of the Highway Course is hosting the “42nd Osaka Prefecture Ski Technical Championships” and the “4th Osaka Prefecture Junior Ski Technical Championships.” With the weekend, heavy snowfall, and competitions all overlapping, a long line had already formed at the No. 3 High-Speed Pair loading area (pictured) before operations began. Two skiers from Okaya City and Matsumoto City, who were first in line (pictured, far left in black), laughed and said, “We always read your reports! We had nothing better to do, so we lined up at 7 a.m.!”
[No. 3 High-Speed Pair]
With intense cold continuing and dense snowfall persisting since yesterday, taking the No. 3 High-Speed Pair before my body had fully warmed up made for a bitterly cold ride. I spoke with a high school-aged competitor (pictured, right), who admitted, “I’m nervous.” Standing next to them, an elementary school–aged athlete (pictured, left) looked relaxed and said confidently, “I’m not nervous at all.”

Thanks to this season’s strongest and longest cold wave, snow across the entire resort has turned into true, quality powder snow. In the ungroomed area between the Moguls Course and Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured), around 30 cm of light new snow had accumulated. With many skiers flowing from the upper Highway Course toward the Kamoshika Course or the Expert Course, first tracks were carved here slightly later on.

In the self-responsibility area on the south side of the Highway Course (pictured), around 30 to 35 cm of fresh snow had piled up, and I was able to enjoy good floatation, though visibility was limited by snowfall and fog. Groomed runs across the resort shared the same conditions: moderately soft powder snow topped with 10 to 15 cm of light new snow. Around 9:30 a.m., a patrol member commented, “We groomed right before operations began, but already another 15 cm has piled up.”
